To Include is To Excel was a four–year (2017-2021), $800,000 initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to stimulate faculty development and support curricular transformation. The project reflected St. Olaf’s deeply held belief that inclusion, equity and excellence are inextricably intertwined. The Mellon funds supported 69 student, faculty, and staff projects to improve equitable and anti-racist teaching and learning. About 4300 students, fully half of the faculty from all departments, and many staff members participated. This work informed new courses for the Ole Core general education, and supported development of the St. Olaf Orientation to Academics and Resources (SOAR) program. To Include is To Excel seeded numerous and substantive changes, and the college remains committed to expanding efforts that enhance excellence of St. Olaf teaching and learning.
Differences are not intended to separate, to alienate. We are different precisely in order to realize our need of one another.Desmond Tutu
